MLM: 3 Facebook Recruiting Mistakes to Avoid

With over a billion people using the site, Facebook is the go-to spot for hungry network marketers looking to recruit smart and active home-based business owners.

And, while Facebook is an absolute goldmine when it comes to making connections, prospecting on this social network is well out of control. To help you learn how not to grow your business on Facebook here are three steps every MLM marketer needs to know.

1. Keep Your Profile Professional

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been prospected by someone who has a timeline cover of them falling out of a nightclub with drinks in their hands, or a wall full of smut or racist comments.

To attract the types of people who want to seriously build a business from home, you have to present yourself in a professional manner. Now, don’t get me wrong, I am not saying you shouldn’t be yourself. But, network marketing is a serious profession, and if you want to recruit other top notch team mates, you must convey some sort of professionalism.

2. Eliminating Your Desire to Spam the Life out of People

With the way that people spam their affiliate and business opportunity links online you’d think this sort of activity must be driving results if so many people are doing it.


The only thing worse than having no prospects is having angry and annoyed prospects. Never send mass messages in the hopes you’ll catch a few people who are interested in your business…it does not work. You wouldn’t walk into a room of people you didn’t know throw your business card at them, without speaking to them beforehand, and then make an exit for the door.  So make sure you don’t do it on Facebook.  The same applies for spamming groups.

3. Don’t take advantage of your relationships

One of the most tragic things on Facebook is the complete lack of respect and courtesy people have for their “friends” because they are so focused on promoting their business. Look, Facebook is a social network, which means you should be building friendships. When someone accepts your friend request, don’t make them regret it because the first thing you send them is a link to your MLM opportunity. I know we’ve all seen those messages:

‘Hey Nicky, I see you are interested in Multi-Level Marketing, me too! Let me share with you this amazing opportunity. I’m not trying to pitch you my business, but if you are interested, here is my link. I think you’d love it. Looking forward to learning more about you.’

‘Hey Nicky, how are you?  It’s been ages since we’ve been in touch.  I hope you are keeping well.  Just wanted to re-connect with you to let you know about a fantastic opportunity that I’d love you to hear about which will definitely be of benefit to you.  No pitch, just facts! When have you got 5 minutes when I can tell you all about it?  Look forward to hearing from you.

Not trying to pitch your business, mmmmm really! This is not what you want to do to build a successful business online, and when it comes to recruiting on Facebook, you should never, ever, ever, send an “unsolicited link” out. This is spam.

BONUS TIP – Don’t constantly post pictures of your feet or using your laptop in the garden!

We’ve all seen the pictures of peoples feet as they lay on their sun lounger or their laptop strategically placed outside on the garden table accompanied by their comment  along the lines that they no longer have to work in an office like the ‘normal average Joe’ due to their MLM business.  These MLMers think that this will attract people wanting the same lifestyle as them.

Initially, this may attract people  to this type of visual post but what they won’t realise is the amount of HARD WORK, time and dedication it takes to get to this position.  More often than not, people expect instant cash and aren’t prepared for this level of commitment so end up leaving your MLM business almost before they have started.

Nearly everyone with a Facebook profile will know more than one or two people who have a MLM business so will end-up seeing pictures of various friend’s feet or garden laptop shots constantly on their feed.  When you see it once you don’t think anything of it, but when you see everyone who has an MLM business doing it constantly this results in it becoming a cringe worthy thing that ends up giving MLM a bad name.   Most people who see these visual posts are sharp enough to realise that it takes at least 3 to 5 years to build an MLM business before you can leave your main place of work or, alternatively, these people posting these pictures are privileged enough to have another form of income or a partner’s income to support them in order that they may build their MLM business so they don’t have to hold down a main job.

Posting pictures like this paints an unrealistic picture of working an MLM business so DON’T DO IT!  If you are doing this, then there are other people who your Facebook friends know doing it too! So what perception do you think this gives?  Not a good one because if it was that easy to do no one would have a ‘proper’ 9-5 job and everyone would have a MLM business!

Always bear in mind that social media is a place to get to know new people, share stories, connect through sincere pictures, videos, and status updates. Not everyone is going to be a good fit for your business opportunity, and it is your job to connect with people, get to know them and what they need. It’s not to ram your MLM opportunity down someone’s throat!

By nurturing your relationships over time on Facebook, you’ll attract like-minded individuals who will come running to you to ask you what it is that you do and how they can be a part of it.

Do you have a QR Code for your business?

Have you got a QR code to promote your business – if not, why not?

It might be that you don’t even know what a QR code is. If not, a Quick Response (QR) Code is a machine-readable code consisting of an array of black and white squares typically used for storing a URL (Universal Resource Locator – the address of a web page) or other information for reading on the camera of a smartphone. The QR Code doesn’t necessarily have to be a video you could also transfer a document for your customers or potential customers to read via their phone in this way too.

You will, probably, be aware that video is, by far, one of the best ways to promote your business, because people get to meet ‘you’ in a video and people tend to do business with people that they know, like and trust, so video is a great way of people meeting you, virtually.

If you have a video that you can promote your business with you should use it in as many ways possible and if using a QR code isn’t something you’ve thought about before, why not look into it now.

It is quite easy to transfer your video to a QR Code. There are many places that you can do it for free over the internet and my greeting card company also provides this service, for free, so that you can then download your QR code onto a greeting card.

My company also has a useful set of instructions that can be incorporated in the card so if your contact doesn’t know how to download the video it tells them exactly what they need to know to do this seamlessly.

If you haven’t already got a QR reader on your phone I-Nigma is a free App to download for Iphone or QR Droid is a free App for Android. Once you have downloaded one of the free Apps all you need to do is hover over the code using the camera on your smartphone until it is completely visible on your screen. It will then automatically swap your phone to YouTube, via the internet connection on your phone, and play the video. How clever is that!

Included on the inside leaf of the card are all the instructions on how to install a QR reader and download the video just in case someone is unsure. Card and postcard marketing isn’t the only way to utilise QR codes into your marketing strategy, you could also include them in e-mails, leaflets, etc.
